Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke win gold medals

Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke became the third and fourth Irish women to win boxing world championship gold medals on Thursday afternoon, following in the footsteps of Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington.

The duo both claimed victories in their final bouts at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Amy Broadhurst won her light welterweight decider against Imane Khelif from Algeria. The 5-0 win also sees the Dundalk boxer pick up a cheque for $100,000 (about €95,000).

Less than a half an hour later, O’Rourke won light middleweight gold against Mozambique’s Alcinda Helena Panguane.

The Roscommon native took the contest on a 4-1 decision and the 20 year-old will receive a cheque for the same amount as her Irish team mate.
